Merlize

I knew it was coming. Sooner or later, it will come to this. But how come it hurts so much? Why do I feel an ache in my chest whenever I think about him? Like a burning black hole sucking in my existence.

“You’ve got a job to do, Merlize Chapman. Do it and become the Senior Partner.”

I give myself a pep talk as I walk to Linderman’s office. He’d suddenly called me out of the blue, probably to talk about the deal with Adam.

And there’s the aching again. It’s so intense that I have to lean against the paneled wall and do some deep breathing exercise Tammy taught me yesterday. It’s been about a week since the showdown at Charles’s restaurant, and there’s been a huge tension between Adam and I ever since.

“You’ll become the senior partner and soon forget all about Adam. Who gives a fuck about him anyway?” Tammy’s excited, high-pitched voice rings in my head.

She’s right. I shouldn’t give a damn about Adam. But the thing is, I do. I really do.

I finally get the aching under control and march confidently, at least that’s how I hope to portray myself, to Linderman’s office. I expect his fat face to scowl up in anger. His thin lips will pucker, and he’ll shout himself hoarse demanding I wrap things up quick with Adam until he becomes red in the face, just like he’d always done every time he calls me into his office since the past couple of weeks. Sometimes, he’d invite Richard to witness the showdown, and the golden boy will be all smiles and smirks as I get shaken down.

I’m already prepared for what’s to come.

“Welcome,” Linderman’s charming smile unnerved me, “Merlize.”

He only ever smiles if the firm takes in a new huge client or if he wants something. Since I haven’t won Adam over yet, I squint my eyes in confusion as I take the outstretched hands of my cunning boss. What does Linderman wants from me?

“Thank you, Mr. Linderman.”

“Please,” he laughs, which is scary rather than calming, “call me Linderman. I know you all do that behind my back, but you have the special grace to do it right in front of me.”

“Linderman, you called for me.”

“Yes, please, sit down,” he offered me a chair.

“I did call for you to ask about the update on the Adam Starling case.”

“Yes, sir,” I stutter, “we’ve already identified five companies we’d likely invest in, and I assure you I’ll get it done in the…”

“It’s okay, Chapman,” Linderman stops my rambling, “geez, you really are nervous. I’m not here to chew your head about the deadline. So calm down, okay.”

“Okay, sir.”

“Good,” Linderman leans forward, “you’re a very ambitious woman, Merlize, and I like that a lot. It’s not easy running circles around men in a male dominated field but you do it quite well.”

“Thank you, sir,” I bow my head slightly, expecting the part where he makes demands after his self-serving flattery.

“I know I don’t say this often, but I’m really proud of you and what you have achieved.
